Having an active lifestyle is a major determinant of maintaining cognitive functioning. Approximately, over24.3 million people have dementia worldwide and 4.6 people are diagnosed every year. Scientists have found that people who have a more active lifestyle or stronger social networks, have a higher resilience that buffers against dementia. In regard to Alzheimer’s disease depression triggers the disease and people who are more satisfied with life build a barrier against the disease.
Besides, being socially active and developing certain lifestyles that help reduce stress (meditation and yoga) may create a buffer against the progression of dementia in general, creating cognitive reserve. As Yakoov Stern observes ‘Cognitive reserve is the idea of building up additional abilities to compensate for the possibility of declining memory or thinking.’
