Active and Inactive Neurons

Active brain cells use more energy than the inactive ones thus, require more glucose and oxygen. In order to meet the demands of active neurons, more blood and oxygen are supplied to these cells than to the inactive ones; therefore, inactive cells are supplied with less blood and ultimately die off.Active cells have the tendency to produce many dendrites which, are branched extensions of a cell. They help in transferring signals to other cells and one single cell has approximately 30,000 connections. The larger the cluster of neurons becomes, the higher the possibility of the cell being activated and hence, surviving. We have a use it or lose it brain; connections we use are strengthened and in the course of time they become permanent (only if repeated), and those we don’t use become weaker and degrade over time therefore we lose the connection to that specific area.
